Six pupils of the Assin Atobease Primary School have reportedly been killed in a gory accident which happened last Friday at Assin Atobease in the Assin South District of the Central Region.
The pupils, all girls, were run over by an articulator truck while they were attempting to cross the Yamoransa-Kumasi Highway which passes through the town after closing from school.
Five of the girls died on the spot with the other dying later at the hospital.
The Assin South District Director of Education Stephen Abanfo who witnessed the unfortunate accident narrated that he was in his office when he a heard an unusually loud noise so he rushed out
After coming out, he realized that the articulator truck with registration number AS 8123-16 had veered off the road and run into the pupils after some metal joints on the car broke. The incident was later confirmed by the Assin South district police commander, DSP Okyere Andam
According to DSP Andam, the truck which was fully loaded with about 850 bags of cement was travelling from Takoradi to Kumasi
At about 2:00 pm, while trying to cross a ramp on the road, the truck developed a mechanical fault which the driver to lose control of the car leading to the accident.
It must be noted that, it is not only the residents of Atobiase who have been dismayed by the accident.
A check on social media reveals that many of the people who have come across the news are very unhappy and heartbroken by the incident.
